What's the most important decision you could ever make? Is it the person you will marry? The job you will train for? The place you will live? Sure, all those things are important. But the most important decision you can ever make is to accept God's offer of salvation through Jesus Christ. That's what it means to become a Christian, for your decision means that you surrender your life to Christ as your Lord and Savior. He will forgive you of your sins, give you eternal life, and then help you live a daily life that pleases God. But you must make that decision on your own. No one can do it for you. So how do you do that? At FBCS, we often use the ABC's to help us understand what to do to become a Christian:
"A" stands for Admit. The Bible teaches that every human being has a problem called "sin." No one is exempt from this problem. As the Bible states, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" and "The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 3:23, 6:23). The first step toward receiving God's free gift of eternal life is to admit that you are a sinner and in need of salvation that you cannot earn on your own.
"B" stands for Believe. The Bible says that "God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). Since the wages of sin is death, someone had to die for your sins. Because God loves you, Jesus Christ died in your place. Believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, and that God raised Him from the dead, and put your trust completely in Him and His work for you.
"C" stand for Confess. And commit. Putting all your faith and trust in Christ, you confess that He is Savior and Lord and commit your life to Him. "If you confess with your mouth 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10:9-10). This also means that you repent of your old life that did not please God, leaving it behind so you can follow Christ. You can do this by praying a simple prayer, one that goes something like this:
"Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. And I know that I cannot save myself. I believe that you died on the cross for me and that you rose from the dead. Please forgive me of my sins, and come into my life today. I repent of my sinful past and commit my life to You today."
